I asked 3 people to do a selfie diary, I didn't explain to them why or what I wanted to achieve. I wanted the selfies to be really natural to the person taking them and to be representative of them and the purpose of their selfies.
I asked 3 very different people, Emma a second year student at Liverpool Hope University, Zoe a second year at Nottingham Trent University and Emily an year 11 living with her family.
All 3 of the girls I asked are very different and had a very different approach to taking the selfies.
Emma's were all just of her face, no other people or detail in the background. All the images she sent to me had a caption, this is how selfies are used in social media, she would explain where she is going or what she is doing in the caption even though the image showed no hint of where she might be or what she might be doing. This to me says a lot about the images as she wants to be the focus of the image and it is important the her that as viewers we look at her face, but she also has the need to let us know that she has a busy life and she has lots going on.
It is a combination of the need to be seen and the need to be seen as a busy and interesting person.
Emily's selfies have a very different vibe, they feel a lot more natural, she seems to have a lot of self confidence but not in a showy way, in a relaxed way! There is a large variety in her images, there are a lot of humorous images, images with other people and some slightly more serious images. Its a really interesting mix and rather than getting to just see her face, there is an insight to her life. I feel these images are more honest and a true representation of who Emily is, rather than trying to emphasise elements of her life to make a point of who she wants to be.
